Search for superheavy elements in nature
نویسندگان
چکیده
2014 Superheavy elements have been searched for by neutron induced fission of mass separated samples. Various natural materials have been investigated : minerals, manganese nodules, lunar dust, meteoritic materials. Fissioning masses have been collected in the A = 300 mass region. However, one cannot conclude that these masses are superheavy elements because of a possible contamination of this mass region by molecules containing natural uranium or thorium. To test for this possibility, the ratios of fast to thermal neutron events have been determined in each separated mass region. These ratios cannot be completely understood as due to the fission of U or Th atoms. Some complementary results concerning the properties of the atoms contained in these masses are also given. Superheavy elements and the upper limit of the periodic table: early speculations
Artificially produced chemical elements heavier than uranium have been known for more than seventy years and the number of superheavy elements continues to grow. Presently 26 transuranic elements are known. This paper examines the earliest scientific interest in the very heavy elements and the related question of an upper limit of the periodic system. In the period from the 1880s to the early 1...
متن کاملAccelerator mass spectrometry – from DNA to astrophysics
A brief review of accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS) is presented. The present work touches on a few technical aspects and recent developments of AMS, and describes two specific applications of AMS, the dating of human DNA with the C bomb peak and the search for superheavy elements in nature. Since two extended general reviews on technical developments in AMS [1] and applications of AMS [2] wi...
متن کاملTheory of Nuclear Reactions Leading to Superheavy Elements
Dynamical reaction theory is presented for synthesis of superheavy elements. Characteristic features of formation and surviving are discussed, which combinedly determine final residue cross sections of superheavy elements. Preliminary results on Z=114 are also given.
متن کاملChemistry of superheavy elements.
The number of chemical elements has increased considerably in the last few decades. Most excitingly, these heaviest, man-made elements at the far-end of the Periodic Table are located in the area of the long-awaited superheavy elements. While physical techniques currently play a leading role in these discoveries, the chemistry of superheavy elements is now beginning to be developed. Advanced an...
متن کاملIonization potentials of superheavy elements No, Lr, and Rf and their ions.
We predict ionization potentials of superheavy elements No, Lr, and Rf and their ions using a relativistic hybrid method that combines configuration interaction (CI) with the linearized coupled-cluster approach. Extensive study of the completeness of the four-electron CI calculations for Hf and Rf was carried out. As a test of theoretical accuracy, we also calculated ionization potential of Yb,...
